But she moved away for work and ended things with him. A few weeks later, he started dating me. I felt my face go cold. “Why would you put that on a cake?” I whispered. Apparently, he had contacted her after I left the restaurant and complained about what happened. She wrote: “I heard about last night. For what it’s worth, I turned him down again. I turned him down three years ago too. I never wanted a relationship with him. You deserved better than being treated like a consolation prize.” I read that message three times. Then I blocked him everywhere. Over the next few weeks, I learned something important. The problem wasn’t that I had been someone’s second choice.
